Target #1: Sid the Science Kid

Our first target on InfoSlug is an easy one - a lame duck, you might say. There's been a lot of controversy over the swine flu, the flu vaccine, health risks, media propaganda, multi-national pharmapseudical corporations, etc.

These are all big issues, and there's a lot of media push on either side of any argument. I don't really think children ages 3-8 have a strong opinion either way. You may ask what that specific age group has to do with the swine flu - other than being in the recommended vaccination group, having to take two shots instead of one - and my answer to you is Sid the Science Kid.

Sid the Science Kid is a show targeted at young children (Ages 3-8), is produced by the Jim Henson company, and airs on the American television station PBS, amongst other networks. The show follows Sid and his interest in science. With its bright colors and catchy tunes, like Dora the Explorer or Bob the Builder, it follows a formula for success. Unfortunately, just like Joe the Plumber, it follows a formula for influencing weak and susceptible minds. I present to you my readers, the flu vaccine song.

What kid wouldn't want to take the shot after watching this? You want to be cool, right? Don't worry about what your parents think - If you take it, all the girls and the little gay kid will just think you're so cool. Also, watch the clip from 0:10-0:15 and listen to that maniacal laugh they slipped in there. If that isn't a New World Order declaration, I don't know what is!

On a more serious note, this clip is just one of many that the young children of today are bombarded with while they innocently open their minds to television. No matter what you think about the Swine Flu, the fact is your children are being trained to think vaccines equate to happiness, community and social acceptance. It's a very mature subject being injected into a seemingly innocent educational show, and with an obvious bias, and it's not the only one of its kind. Government talking points and memes are being placed strategically into all sorts of media, especially entertainment television.

Don't believe me? Check the required reading section on this post. It has a list of shows associated with one particular media project that happened recently, and a flash game on the PBS website.
